Would it be possible to add an option to show either artists, album artists, albums etc on top instead of just default artists as it is on top of genre screen ? Currently it defaults to artist without option to tweak.

It's technically easy, but a hard design question, as added option can't be easily modified if it isn't thoroughly thought.

  • If I add the possibility to toggle, then there will definitely someone who wants all three presented at the same time. How should that fit onto a phone screen?
  • How should this extend to other categories?
  • Should I include compilation albums containing only one track of this genre, which is consistent with other category cards but might be the opposite of what the target users want?

etc, etc. I could of course add a preference for each and every possibility, but then the app will explode in many senses.

I also looked at other music players: my desktop player only lists tracks and albums without customization; various other popular open source Android apps also all don't have customization, and many only list tracks. Jumping to the conclusion that this is a rare and unresearched feature, maybe for the time being... less is more.

I'll leave this open so other users can add their opinions.

You raise good points. Compilation albums and/or featured songs can make this menu cluttered. Possibly having an option to toggle it between album artist or track artist may be better.
Currently In my hip hop genre menu it breaks up an album into 4 separate files because it has multiple featured artists.
I am anal about music organization. Sorry for the trouble !
